Summer Sauna

Why Using a Sauna in Summer Might Be the Best Time of Year to Start

One way to cool down on a very hot summers day…

When the weather heats up, many people naturally put the sauna on hold. After all, why would you choose to sit in a hot room when it's already warm outside?

The reality is that summer may be one of the best times to enjoy regular sauna sessions. Beyond relaxation, sauna use can help your body become more efficient at handling heat, improve thermoregulation, and offer valuable opportunities for social connection and wellbeing.

Struggling to cope with the heat, maybe summer Sauna is the answer.

Training Your Body to Handle Heat

One of the remarkable things about the human body is its ability to adapt. Just as exercise trains muscles and cardiovascular fitness, regular heat exposure can train your body's cooling systems.

When you spend time in a sauna, your core temperature rises, your heart rate increases, and your body begins to sweat in an effort to maintain a stable internal temperature. Over time, this repeated exposure encourages several beneficial adaptations:

  • Earlier onset of sweating

  • Increased sweat production

  • Improved circulation

  • More efficient cooling responses

  • Better tolerance of hot weather

These adaptations can make everyday life more comfortable during the summer months. Many athletes use heat exposure as a form of training because it helps the body cope better with warm conditions, reducing perceived effort and improving overall comfort.

In simple terms, regular sauna use teaches your body to become more effective at staying cool when temperatures rise.

Improved Thermoregulation and Resilience

Thermoregulation is the body's ability to maintain a stable internal temperature regardless of external conditions. Modern life often shields us from temperature extremes through central heating, air conditioning, and highly controlled environments.

While comfort is convenient, it can also mean our bodies have fewer opportunities to practise adapting to changing temperatures.

Regular sauna use challenges the body's natural regulatory systems in a controlled and safe environment. This process can help improve heat tolerance and increase what many researchers refer to as "physiological resilience"—the body's ability to respond and adapt to stress.

This doesn't mean life becomes stress-free, but it does mean your body becomes better equipped to manage physical challenges, whether that's a hot summer day, a demanding workout, or simply the pressures of everyday life.

The Mental Benefits of Stepping Into the Heat

The sauna offers something increasingly rare in modern life: uninterrupted time.

No notifications. No emails. No screens competing for your attention.

The simple act of sitting quietly in the heat creates space to slow down, breathe deeply, and disconnect from the constant stimulation that many of us experience throughout the day.

Many regular sauna users report feeling calmer, more focused, and mentally refreshed after a session. While part of this may be due to physiological responses such as endorphin release and improved circulation, part of it comes from creating a dedicated period of stillness.

In a world that often encourages us to do more, the sauna reminds us of the value of simply being present.

@ the bushcraft Show

As if to prove the point we have just finished our first festival of the season, providing a wellness village for the bushcraft show at the beautiful Stanford in Lutterworth.

Four days of high 20’s to mid 30’s and wall to wall sunshine made for the perfect weekend, a little worried about how that would affect bookings we were pleasantly surprised by the amount of people that came for a sauna in what was a super hot weekend.

Interestingly every single person came out of the sauna saying how much they had enjoyed the experience and how they felt better after, more relaxed and better able to cope with the outside temperatures. So much so that many people booked for consecutive days, it was a wonderful show and we share our space with some fantastic people.

It was fantastic to see so many people who had not met before connecting in the sauna or by our campfire, some who didn’t come prepared, in their underwear, just showing that sauna is for every body

We did have a shower and plunge pool to cool down too between rounds and refreshments for rehydration, looking forward to more festivals this summer to share our passion and spread the sauna gospel,

Why Summer Is the Perfect Time to Start

Summer provides an ideal introduction to sauna use. Moving between warm outdoor temperatures and the controlled heat of a sauna often feels more accessible for beginners than stepping from freezing winter conditions into intense heat.

It's also the perfect season to combine sauna with outdoor cooling, whether that's a cold shower, a dip in the sea, or simply sitting outside and enjoying the fresh air.

These hot-and-cold contrasts not only feel invigorating but also encourage the body to work through its natural temperature regulation processes.

More Than Just Heat

At its core, sauna is about far more than getting hot.

It's about training the body to adapt, improving resilience, creating moments of calm, and fostering meaningful social connection. It's a practice that has stood the test of time because it supports both physical and mental wellbeing in a way that feels natural and enjoyable.

So the next time someone says it's too hot for a sauna, consider the possibility that summer might actually be the perfect time to step inside, embrace the heat, and discover what your body is capable of.
